ABOUT POWERFLOW MARINE
Small by design. Built by the sailors who use it.
Small is the plan, not the limitation.
Powerflow Marine is a two-person operation and we intend to keep it that way. Jack and Sonya live aboard Gemini full time. They spend half the year offshore and come back to Port Townsend each October to build. Four to six conversions per season, every one done by hand.
When you stay small, you stay accountable. There is no production line, no junior tech finishing your wiring, and nobody cutting corners on a Friday afternoon. Jack builds every system himself and he sails one of them across oceans. That is the quality standard.
Jack and Sonya
Jack spent years as a BMW technician before full time on the water took over. He and Sonya both hold U.S. Coast Guard captain's licenses and have delivered boats up and down the West Coast together. They know what dependable systems look like because they’ve depended on them.
The G22 system on Gemini was built and installed by Jack and Sonya themselves in Mexico, in 2023. From there, they cruised the Sea of Cortez, crossed to French Polynesia, and completed the return passage to Washington State under electric propulsion. That crossing is the performance data that matters.
After college Sonya worked at sailing schools, sail lofts, local boat yards and as crew on yachts. Her passion for everything boats continued when Spirit Marine Services was started in the SF Bay area. Jack and Sonya ran this marine refit and maintenance business for 7 years. The fleet of boats under their care grew to 17, getting ongoing monthly upkeep, cruising upgrades and onboard energy use upgrades.
We’re here to bring you solutions.
My time spent as a trained BMW technician highlighted the inefficiencies and wastefulness of internal combustion engines, fueling my passion for creating long-lasting solutions in the marine industry. During my time at sea, I’ve observed various boat traits, common running issues faced by boat owners, and the habits of many different sailors. It became clear that what my sailing community needed: electric propulsion systems and a team you can count on.
What we actually do when we show up.
A Powerflow conversion is not just swapping the engine.
We review how you want to use the boat and build toward that. The goal every time is a system that is as close to 100 percent off grid as possible, fuel efficient, and reliable enough that you stop thinking about it. High-end creature comforts, same performance, quieter and cleaner than what it replaced.
For select projects Jack travels to the vessel to complete the installation. If your boat is on the U.S. West Coast, East Coast or anywhere between, mention it in your application. We have done it before and it is often the right call for a complete refit.
Who we do our best work for.
Sailors with real passages planned
Coastal, offshore, ocean crossing, it doesn’t matter as long as you need it to work without a diesel mechanic nearby. That’s who this system is designed for.
Owners who want to understand their own boat
We do a full handoff on every build. By the time we are done you know how your system works, how to use it underway, and what to do if something needs attention at sea.
People who plan ahead
Build slots fill during the off season. If you are planning a departure for next spring, now is the right time to apply -- not six weeks before you want to leave.
