NOW IS THE TIME TO GO ELECTRIC

We love helping you move away from diesel engines and transition to electric propulsion systems. Check out some of our friends that have made the transition with ease!

“The smell of diesel fuel and oil was a constant problem at sea with crew feeling queasy.”

-Glenn R. | The Free Spirit

Le Dodo

From a Volvo MK17 to the PFM G17c.

G17c motor system installed in a S211a

The decision to convert was lung damage related to 9/11 that is getting progressively worse and the old diesel started to smoke which created a severe health risk for me. Already sensitive to exhaust fumes we decided to re-power with electric to eliminate all fumes and health risk for me.

Le Dodo’s switch from diesel to electric.

  • Its very quiet and a huge improvement over the loud diesel.I can acuttully play music a low volume and talk to people while motoring.

  • No regrets. Not differently, but still have future plans to add a wind generator for the propulsion bank. If I new I was going to go electric, I would have waited to redo the house bank and electrical system. However, the setup aboard Le Dodo works great and gives an impressive range on a sunny day with little wind.

  • Nothing. I needed a change to accommodate the reverse gear/Vdrive setup and Powerflow made it happen.

FREE SPIRIT

From a Volvo MD21B to the PFM B15.

A sailboat named 'Free Spirit' floating on calm water with a hillside, trees, and houses in the background, under a clear blue sky.

Glenn made the decision to go electric after spending money on re-building his existing Volvo gearbox after the aging motor died. He had been paying attention to other sailors out there and their journey going electric. After the pricing of diesel replacement motors and the cost of diesel hitting $2.00 a litre, it made the decision to go electric all the more viable.

Free Spirit’s switch from diesel to electric.

  • As quiet as expected. With the cockpit
lockers open you can hear the engine. But once closed I hardly know it’s on, except for the propwash
    out the stern.

  • None so far for the electric. But I should not have wasted money rebuilding the Volvo gearbox.

  • While sailing with regen on Low I was impressed with
how little power we used sailing back from Mossman. Further tests needed.

“The (B15) motor system is as quiet as expected.”

Ralph made the decision to convert his Fife 36 Linear Rater (a classic sailing yacht from 1907) electric after coming to terms with his “old clunky diesel, dirty, fuel guzzler”.

Eun Na Mara’s switch from diesel to electric.

  • Yes it performs well..very quiet (hardly know when it is running when it’s running).

  • Maybe opt for a second lithium battery if cash was not an object.

  • How easy it was, but in hindsight, I could have positioned some of the ancillary gear in better positions.

“I didn’t realize how easy it was going to be.”
