FAQ

Q — Why should I consider switching my boat to electric?
A — Owners say they switched to remove diesel headaches (smoke, maintenance, noise) and for health/environmental reasons. Several respondents reported better day-to-day range when paired with a properly sized solar/battery setup.

Q — What were customers’ top concerns before switching?
A — Range anxiety and whether electric is “powerful enough” for their needs were the most common concerns. Many found those worries eased after installation and with correct battery/solar sizing.

Q — Do I need a technical background to install or run an electric system?
A — Install difficulty varies. Some owners were marine/electrical pros and did much themselves; others had professionals do the electrical work. If you’re not confident, plan on using a certified marine electrician for safe installation. We have an installation team in Port Townsend, WA.

Q — How hard is the installation?
A — Common challenges were boat-specific fitment (engine bed layout, wiring harness length, space for cooling) and alignment/vibration issues. Good planning and component placement up-front reduce delays.

Q — Will I need to change my propeller or shaft?
A — Some customers kept their original props; others changed to an Autoprop type or had a new prop shaft made and adjusted coupling lengths. Expect prop/shaft work for optimal performance in many re powers.

Q — How does electric compare for noise and responsiveness?
A — Almost universally quieter; owners appreciate the lack of diesel drone. Responsiveness is typically better (faster throttle response), though top power depends on system sizing and prop match.

Q — Is the motor powerful enough?
A — For typical cruising and slow moves many owners reported sufficient power. Immediate throttle response takes some getting use to.

Q — How do owners couple the motor to the prop shaft?
A — Most used standard shaft couplings appropriate to their hull layout; some redesigned engine beds or used custom couplings to fit their shaft geometry. Adding on the Sigma Drive coupling is easy during the purchase process.

Q — Battery placement and ballast concerns — what did people do?
A — Owners often custom-mounted batteries for ballast balance (some placed batteries port/starboard). Secure mounting and consideration for list/trim are commonly recommended.
