Hans Christian 38T Electric Conversion

A turnkey electric conversion for the Hans Christian 38T, designed around this hull and built by one builder. Diesel engine removed and Powerflow Marine G22 48V motor system installed, with a battery bank and charging sized for how you sail.

We live aboard our own Passport 42, Gemini, and run the same system. Gemini has completed over 10,000 nautical miles on a G22, including 23 days from Mexico to the Marquesas with no diesel and no generator.

Range on electric

At 5 knots, a Hans Christian 38T needs about 6.2 kW. That works out to 5 hours 33 minutes of motoring on an 800 Ah bank, or 3 hours 28 minutes on 500 Ah.

Runtimes are in hours and minutes and stop at a 10% reserve. These are estimates at 53V, and we set them on the conservative side. Our own Passport 42 uses about 5 kW at 5 knots, and these numbers assume closer to 6. Prop, bottom condition and sea state will change the numbers for your boat, so every accepted build gets a boat report for that vessel. Under sail, regen puts energy back in. Gemini averaged 7 kWh a day over 23 days to the Marquesas.

The system

The G22 is a 22 kW, 48V liquid-cooled motor system. It replaces diesels up to 60 hp, and the motor system starts at $21,500. We quote the full conversion (diesel removal, batteries, charging and installation) for each boat after the application and fit call.

Want more range? Take a look at our 48V DC generator. It charges the propulsion bank directly, so you can keep motoring when the batteries alone would run low.

Want more speed, or is your boat over 35,000 lb? The G22 holds up to 7.5 knots on a Hans Christian 38T. Ask about our parallel hybrid. It pairs the electric motor with a diesel on the same driveline, so you have full power up to hull speed. The design is complete and we're looking for the first owner to build it with. Start a parallel hybrid conversation.

Build slots

We take on four to six conversions a season. The 2027 season runs May through August, and every build starts with an application and a fit call.
