Electric and Hybrid Sailboat Conversions in Seattle and Puget Sound

Powerflow Marine is based in Port Townsend, at the top of Puget Sound. We design and build electric and hybrid propulsion for cruising sailboats, one boat at a time, and we take on four to six conversions a season.

Our own boat, Gemini, is a Passport 42 that runs on the same G22 system we build for clients. She has completed over 10,000 nautical miles on it, including the Pacific crossing from Mexico to the Marquesas, before sailing home to Port Townsend.

Where we work

Our shop is at 234 Otto Street in Port Townsend. We're a short drive or ferry ride from Seattle, Bainbridge, Edmonds, Everett, Anacortes, Bellingham, Gig Harbor, Olympia and the San Juans, and we travel to the boat for select projects. Every build starts with an application and a fit call, so we can talk through your boat and how you use it before anything gets scheduled.

Why electric works well here

Most motoring in the Sound is short. You're getting off the dock, crossing to the next anchorage, or punching through a channel when the wind dies. That's exactly where an electric motor shines. It's quiet, it's instant, and there's no diesel smell in a boat that's closed up for the rainy months.

The one thing to plan for is current. Admiralty Inlet, Rich Passage and Deception Pass can run several knots, and you don't want to be fighting a big ebb at hull speed on battery. Our runtime tables show how long your boat can hold each speed, so you can time your passages and know what you have in reserve. If you want more margin, a 48V DC generator keeps the bank topped up on longer runs.

We've worked out speed, power and runtime for the bluewater boats we get asked about most, including Passport, Valiant, Pacific Seacraft, Hallberg-Rassy, Tayana and Island Packet. Find yours on Boats We Convert. If you have a heavier boat or a powerboat, take a look at our hybrid options. You can also read how Gemini crossed the Pacific with no generator.
